ID THEFT SCAMS

New ID theft scams are on the move. According to Michelle Singletary, a regular on NPR and Washington Post columnist, thieves are calling unsuspecting victims posing as government workers and tricking people into revealing their personal data.  Any information the consumer can obtain from the caller should be reported immediately to the FTC (www.ftc.gov).

The following Websites include tools and information that may support your efforts to help keep personal information safe.

EMAIL SCAMS

Fraudulent VISA email

Below is an example of a fraudulent VISA email attempting to steal your account information and your identity. VISA , NOFFCU or any agency associated with credit unions will never request your account information via email. If you receive an email like the one below, follow these guidelines:

  1. Do not click on any of the links contained in the email. (The links in the sample below have been disabled)
  2. Contact NOFFCU if you have any doubts about the email's legitimacy or if you have concerns about the security of your account
  3. Delete the email. Do not respond to the email! By responding to the email you confirm to the sender that your email is a valid email and this can lead to an increase in spam and fraud attempts

SAMPLE OF FRAUDULENT EMAIL:

Good afternoon, unfortunately some processings have been cracked by hackers, so a new secure code to protect your data has been introduced by Visa. You should check your card balance and in case of suspicious transactions immediately contact your card issuing bank. If you don't see any suspicious transactions, it doesn't mean that the card is not lost and cannot be used. Probably, your card issuers have not updated information yet. That is why we strongly recommend you to visit our website and update your profile, otherwise we cannot guarantee stolen money repayment. Thank you for your attention. Click here and update your profile.
